Ancient Thermal Tradition
The first evidence of the thermal baths of Abano and Montegrotto is linked to the Euganean people (15th and 16th centuries BC); the tradition was reinforced by the Veneto people with the cult of Aponus, god of thermal water and its curative virtues. Today, like 2000 years ago, these capitals of well-being are immersed in the reinvigorating green of the Euganean Hills and offer holidays of health, beauty and relaxation for body and mind.
Thermal Water
The water of the thermal basin of Abano and Montegrotto belongs to the category of deep underground waters. Its precious uniqueness is a result of the long journey it has undertaken: the water comes from the uncontaminated basin of the Lessini Mountains, in the Pre-Alps, and flows underground through calcareous rock to a depth of 2000-3000 metres; it is subjected to high temperature and high pressure during a journey of approximately 80 kilometres, which lasts an average of 25/30 years. This journey enriches the water with mineral salts and carries it as far as the Euganean Spa resorts where it gushes out at a temperature of 87°C. The richness of the dissolved substances makes this water a unique thermal resource, classified chemically as hyperthermal bromo-iodied salt water, with a fixed residue at 180° of 5-6 grams of dissolved salts per litre. The extraordinary therapeutic value of the water and mud of Abano and Montegrotto is also due to the strictness of the regulations which govern thermal extraction, thereby avoiding indiscriminate use of and damage to this resource.
Thermal Mud
The thermal baths of Abano and Montegrotto together comprise Europe’s largest spa specializing in mud therapies. The Euganean thermal mud is a careful mix of natural clay, mineral water and micro-organisms which is “matured” in special tanks for around 2/3 years during which time the mud is maintained in continual contact with thermal water flowing at a constant rhythm at a temperature of 60°C: this process ensures that the mud acquires all the therapeutic properties which make it unique. The clay used for the mud is extracted from the thermal lakes of Lispida and Arquà Petrarca, where the material has already been in contact for a long time with the Euganean mineral water, thereby undergoing a natural “maturation” process and acquiring many of its therapeutic properties. Mud therapy and bath therapy are used traditionally to treat rheumatic pathologies, principally for so-called degenerative forms (primary and secondary osteoarthrosis) and other afflictions (both inflammatory and traumatic) of the musculoskeletal system. The efficiency of this therapy has also been demonstrated recently in the area of osteoporotic pathology.
Thermal Treatments
Therapeutical approach: osteoarthrosis, inflammatory rheumatic pathologies (not during exacerbations), tendonitis, chronic fascitis, shoulder periarthritis, some post traumatic conditions, muscle pain syndromes derived from posture causes, pathologies of the upper and lower airways, pathologies of the middle ear.
